With the recent auction of a "promotional/crew gift" mask being the hot topic in the hockey mask world, quite a few questions have been brought up about the Waters/Dermody mask which was recently posted right here. With a few quick side-by-sides and a scrutinizing eye it's clear to see the Dermody mask was the same mask used in the Alice Cooper photo shoot for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. CJ Graham was there in full Jason gear for the shoot as well. The photo mash-up above shows the Dermody mask along with different shots of the Cooper mask. Same mask. Anyone having the larger versions of these photos can see it even better.

And on that note, the Dermody/Cooper mask is a different kind of mask from the recent "promotional/crew gift" mask that was auctioned off. The plastic isn't the same and the paint is different as well. One can conclude that the Dermody/Cooper mask is NOT a "promotional/crew gift" mask but rather a production made hockey mask for the film itself. Check out the Bill Forsche photos and tell me it isn't one of the masks laying on the floor. While it's difficult to pinpoint, it can be narrowed down to a couple of masks. And those masks look nothing like the recently auctioned "promotional/crew gift" mask.

UPDATE:
After going through a few scenes on the Jason Lives DVD last night, I matched the Dermody/Cooper mask to the mask seen in the opening James Bond-esque zoom sequence. So in fact, the Dermody/Cooper mask is a screen-used mask.

John Waters, Dennis Dermody and Jason Lives . . .

So as the story goes, director John Waters was gifted a production made hockey mask from Jason Lives. Said mask was stolen from his porch step but later returned anonymously to the local police station. Officers informed Waters who later picked up the mask. John Waters went on to regift it to his pal actor/critic/cinemaniac Dennis Dermody (see the above photo). The mask now hangs in Dermody's apartment along with a ton of other movie memorabilia. It's been a while since I actually did anything for Halloween. So I was thinking maybe this year I would build a costume. I don't have the lankier build of say a Freddy Krueger, The Shape or a mummy for instance. I'm a bigger, broad shouldered kind of guy. So I like to keep my options realistic here. I'd like to actually look the part. So I've narrowed it down to two choices. The GillMan from The Creature Walks Among or the broader, bigger Chaney version of the Frankenstein Monster. I'll be sculpting the appropriate mask and other parts but I need some help in deciding which one to choose. What say ye?

Last year I had a really great idea; do an illustration to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the original Friday the 13th. Sure it had been done. But not like this. 'I'll have all the entire Voorhees gang all posed together for like a family reunion type shot' I thought. But I wasn't going to stop there. I felt the survivors needed their spotlight also to compliment the villain(s). So, borrowing a layout from the great Norman Rockwell, I scratched out some designs. As the year went by however I lost touch with the project and the big three-oh had passed. So what! I dusted off the old prelim sketches and got back to some action.

Those crude prelims are shown above. I squeezed all the Jasons into one shot along with the infamous imposter and a triple shot of Mrs. Voorhees. Moving on to the other layout, I added almost every key survivor from the first to the remake. Represented are (in no order) Alice, Ginny, Paul, Ted (for comedic relief), Chris, Trish, Young Tommy, Pam, Mental Tommy, Reggie the Reckless, Megan, Final Tommy, Tina, Nick, Rennie, Sean, Jessica, Steven and Baby Stephanie, Lori, Will, Rowan, and finally Clay and Whitney. The sketches were color coded so I could keep them straight. Both illustrations have progressed and, although there were a few changes made from these concepts to their final versions (most notable being a few Jasons lost their masks), they are looking great. I'll post them when finished.

On the Run . . .

This is one of a few drawings in a side project I'm working on. The concept here is to bridge key segments from the films with comic-style cover art, making them the kind of scenes we would love to have seen played out on film. The final pieces will be traditionally inked and then colored.

"Mystery" Mask Part 2 . . .

Back in March I posted on the "mystery mask" and it's relevance to the Friday the 13th films. You can read the first part here. This particular mask may be more important in relation to all those "movie mold" masks that are on the market today. How so? Well let's take a look.

Above we have what I have termed the Mystery Mask. As shown in the previous post back in March, this is the very same mask that appears in a Paramount video promo for Friday the 13th part V: A New Beginning. Although the red forehead triangle was changed and cheek triangles were added (along with straps), this is the very same mask. A mask that, by all accounts, can be called a "sister" mask to the original masks made for and seen in Friday the 13th part 3-D. On a side note, another "sister" mask can also be seen in the promotional spots for The Final Chapter that aired on TV back when the film was being released in theaters. The interesting thing about this mask is what appears to be black electrician's tape applied to the inside forehead and mouth, probably for attaching line to achieve the flipping/spinning effect. You can see the mask at the end of the video below.

Now back to the Mystery Mask. For a few years it was kept in the Hollywood Wax Museum on a display. Both the Mystery Mask and the undermask it was displayed on were labeled "screen used". While the exact period when this mask was produced is arguable, it can obviously be dated back to A New Beginning due to it being used in the promo. There were 3 different Jason-style hockey masks shown in that film (the blue marked Roy-style being excluded). One scene is the opening grave scene. The mask used in that scene bears a remarkable resemblance to the Roy mask as far as shape is concerned. Another mask is, of course, the original part 3/4 "stunt" mask used for the mirror scene and the final hospital hallucination scene. Finally we see what appears to be yet another Jason-style mask in the barnyard hallucination scene. The overall shape looks much more like the original part 3 masks rather than the newly (at the time) remodeled Roy-style masks. Could this mask be the Mystery Mask and therefore, along with the undermask, actually be determined "screen-used"? Take a look at the comparison shot below.

Taking into account the different lighting and exposure of the two photos used, a good eye will notice quite a few similarities like the forehead triangle, eye shape, and various weathered marking on each mask. The cheek snaps could have been added on later for the video promo shoot. According to part 3-D fx artist Doug White, he was asked to send over a couple of masks to the production of A New Beginning. One thing is certain, the mask in this scene does not appear to be from the same vacuform buck as the redesigned Roy-style masks. The story of the Mystery Mask moves on still!

Most fans and followers of the hockey mask will no doubt be familiar with the few photos showing Gabe Bartalos and Bill Forsche posing with nearly a dozen hockey masks made for Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives. But one of those photos in particular is very interesting as you will see below.

A close up shows Mr. Forsche wearing a hockey mask on his head. For those of you who thought this was yet another Jason Lives style mask, look again. A good eye will notice the differences in this mask and the ones behind him. And, taking perspective and angle into consideration, an even better eye will notice the very same color, eye cuts, perimeter trim, hole placement, markings and weathering patterns that appear on the Mystery Mask. Man, this mask sure does get around! The proof above that the Mystery Mask was around during Jason Lives production could explain why it would later appear in the Hollywood Wax Museum with Jason Lives style forehead mark and more importantly the same style leather, riveted straps.

But exactly how is this mask relevant to those "movie mold" masks produced today? Stay tuned.

Anyone following the history of the hockey mask throughout the years will tell you that there are many, many questions that will more than likely never be answered. Fair enough. As is the case with this mask seen above. Where did it come from? What is it exactly? Well it appears to be very close in color and markings to the Final Chapter mask, which was made for and used in part 3 and later went on . . .blah, blah, blah. We all know the story of that mask. The mask above does in fact come from the same source (read: mold) as the original masks made in 1982 for Friday the 13th part 3. A "sister" mask of the original Hero and Stunt masks if you will. It's not from later, smaller, slightly distorted copy molds used for the films after part 5. Which incidentally have an "ax mark" molded right into them. The original didn't. Now look past the wrongly added on (much later) red markings and part 6-ish straps and you will see that this mask was also used in promotional material for part 5. As seen here . . . .

But the question remains. Was this mask made for part 3? Was it made for part 4? Yes. The answer lies somewhere within those two films. It's painted the very same color. My bet is that it was a leftover mask or blank made for part 3 and subsequently brought over to be used in part 4. Notice the equally aged undermask. But only one mask can be seen in part 4 right? Right. During the recording of his commentary for the Deluxe Edition dvd of the Final Chapter, director Joe Zito told me personally that a "couple or so" masks were used for the movie. The original "hero" 3 was in fact on set for a while. I have photos showing it being worn in second unit shots around Rob's tent set. Did it make it to film? Nope. It was later used for the promotional material for part 4 of course.

Fun with PhotoShop . . .

Lately I have been getting a lot of questions regarding an image that dates back about two years ago. It's a PhotoShop manipulation I did, with permission, of an existing photograph. I'm sure many of you have seen it floating around in various forms. The image has definitely made it's rounds and has become quite popular. But to answer (and settle) a few questions, although the original photograph was not taken by myself, yes, I did create the final image you see. My logo appears on every copy out there unless it was removed by third parties for whatever reasons.

A lot went into creating the final image. It wasn't just a simple case of adding a background and some rain effects. For starters, I create my own effects. The rain, fog, water drips and highlights, and color tones were all done from scratch and not from stock imagery or filters. The only images I used aside from the original were portions of a couple of different forest scenes. Those clippings were combined to form one solid background and then colorized to simulate a dark and dreary mood. The figures in the original photograph were lifted out and placed onto the new background. From there, they were color corrected to match and further manipulated by getting rid of a few problem areas and changing the sweater/shirt colors - mostly subtle changes like slimming down proportions, etc. Finally, multiple layers of rain, fog, water drips and highlights were added in front of and behind the figures layer. There are a total of 11 layers combined. You can see the difference in the two images above. What went from being a brightly lit, everyday convention photo with a great pose by the figures, turned into an effective and moody image that looks straight out of a story.

First, The Hideous Looking Man masks will be in the painting stages sometime this week. I'm looking forward to seeing a bunch of these guys staring back at me. Thanks to all who made it in on the first run (which filled up kinda quick) and sorry to those who contacted me late and didn't make it. I'll be posting some photos here as the paint flows.

And the second bit of news is kind of a downer I suppose. As some of you may know, I stopped taking commission orders on the Jason-style hockey masks back in mid-January. Without getting into specifics, it's just time for me to concentrate on other work, both in and outside of this hobby. I have a small number of hockey masks to finish up and that will be it. I still welcome custom-style mask commissions, as those are fun and less stressful to do, and I also have quite a few blank hockey masks laying around that I'll paint up and offer from time to time. But once again, no more commission orders for the Jason-style hockey masks. It should go without saying, but those that have an order in progress don't worry.

Recently I had the chance to attempt a reproduction of one of the masks used in the eighth film. It is best seen in the "toxic waste to the face" unmasking segment. A crack is present in the mask, running horizontal across the forehead. The original mask is in the hands of a collector today.

Check out this rather cool Final Chapter mask. The customer wanted the inside of the mask stained and weathered, so I took it a bit further with the dried bloodstained look. Turned out pretty dang cool!

Finished up this nice mask for a great customer from the land down under. It began as a David Miller Creations mask with the studio paint job. I completely repainted it and then fitted it with much more accurate strapping. Looks cool in the rain too! Check out more photos in the Gallery.

What A Nightmare . . .

Just finished up a slick paint job on this latex bust. The thick, raw pull came directly from master sculptor and wax figure king Henry Alvarez. After cleaning it up and removing the flashing, I laid down some paint, added acrylic eyes and ended up with something that appears to be straight out of a nightmare . . . literally. Thanks to Terry Michaux, this was a fun commission to work on and a break from the hockey mask routine. I dig it!

Twenty-seven years ago today, Friday the 13th part 3-D opened up in theaters across the country. Considered one of the most successful entries in the franchise, largely due to the 3-D gimmick, this film is best remembered for introducing the iconic hockey mask that will forever be associated with the franchise. This was also the first Friday to be filmed in California, abandoning the previous 2 films' eastern locations.

Meeting Mr. Voorhees . . .

Earlier this year I was hired on to the production team behind the Deluxe Edition DVDs of Friday the 13th parts 4-8. Above are the original storyboard panels I illustrated for the Meeting Mr. Voorhees segment on the Jason Lives disc. On the evening before our deadline in February, I was given a copy of the script and an audio file narrated by actor Bob Larkin, who reprised his role as Martin the Undertaker. Talk about a last minute job! Using the descriptions in Tom McLoughlin's script and the audio track, I storyboarded the artwork to closely follow his original vision. I chose to produce the sketches in a modified comic book format as opposed to traditional storyboard sequencing. Each "page" was pencilled on 11" x 14" 100# bristol.

Evolution of a Mask . . .

I just finished up a trio of masks that, without a doubt, were the most detailed I have ever done. It's a pretty safe bet to say that there aren't 3 more detailed masks out there, by me or anyone else. The mask I replicated started out as the back-up mask used in Part 3, most notably seen in the final sequence with an ax embedded in it. This very mask went on to be used exclusively in The Final Chapter and also made an appearance throughout A New Beginning. I was commissioned to reproduce that mask in 3 of its 4 varying screen appearances. Mission accomplished! More and better photos will be uploaded to the Gallery in the next couple of days.

X Marks the Spot . . .

Above are photos of a recent X style mask I painted and strapped for a customer. The mask itself begin as a blank fiberglass casting from Bob over at FiberGlassMasks.com. I've always disliked this mask, maybe because of the way it looked with the complete costume from the movie. But now I've actually warmed up to it some. To clarify, I'm speaking of the mask . . . not the movie. The movie still sucks!

Haunting at Home . . .

Available today on store shelves is the release of The Haunting in Connecticut, the 2009 film based on actual events. I was fortunate to have worked on some bonus material for the DVD/BluRay releases thanks to my good friend, producer/director Daniel Farrands. The discs feature deleted scenes with optional commentary, 4 featurettes including The Fear is Real: Re-Investigating the Haunting and Anatomy of a Haunting, a digital copy of the film and audio commentaries. So check it out for a good scare.

Well, technically I guess. The replica mask above was made a few months ago for the production of the upcoming Ultimate Edition dvd of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. It was used in a couple of interview segments located on the bonus features. Actors Jensen Daggett and Scott Reeves both signed the inside of the mask.

As I've said before, custom designs are always fun to do and this was no exception. From the fictional semi-pro hockey team the Philadelphia Phantom Skulls, this mask (sans strapping) looks like it's straight from the 1970s . . . dried blood stains and all.

A Very Special Project . . .

With the upcoming release of the second wave of Friday the 13th Deluxe Edition DVDs, available June 16th, I thought it was a good time to break away from my normal routine of staying in the background and share my involvement and participation with these discs. I am very proud of the work I produced for my boss and friend Daniel Farrands. We spent nearly four months working on the production of the supplemental material that is spread out over the Final Chapter, A New Beginning and Jason Lives deluxe editions. The majority of my involvement is within a 3-part feature called Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited where I designed everything from newspaper clippings to x-rays and more. And by more I mean a ton of really cool shit! Sneak peaks of some of the material have been shown over on my additional site the Crystal Lake Variety Store, which has sort of become an unofficial tie-in to the "mockumentary". There's also a pretty beatass project on the Jason Lives disc that I feel honored to have done. Like I said before, some really cool shit.

Coming from a lifelong fan, I can tell you that these releases are the shit. It will be a long, long time before this series is again given the treatment that it has been given here. And chances are it may not even happen at all. I will be flying out to L.A. in a couple of days to attend a release party and special screening (first and only time on the big screen) of CLMR. What a cool project this has been. But it's only the beginning!

Dream Mask . . .

Above are some shots of a very recent mask replicating the Final Chapter mask that was modified and re-used in A New Beginning in the hospital dream sequence. The original mask this replica was based on is the only hockey mask to appear in three films. It began as one of two masks that can be seen on screen in part 3D then was used exclusively for the Final Chapter. After the production of A New Beginning, the mask fell into the hands of veteran stuntman/actor Dick Warlock. Where it still resides today.
